Modifying oil filter/sandwich plate to clear long tube heade

Post by AznTKDmstr »

Hey guys. I came into an issue with my used jsp headers I picked up not too long ago. When i mounted them up to test fit, the bottom of he headers wouldnt clear the stock oil filter neck, etc. I'm planning on running an oil cooler and relocation kit, which definitely won't clear:
Image

Here are the parts I planning on running:

1)Mocal Sandwich adapter for oil cooler (Part SP1T)
Image
2) Earls filter bypass (Part #1178)
Image
So this is what I've come up with.
3) Earls remote filter mount (Part #2178)
Image
4) Oil Cooler

So my thought is to completely remove the stock sandwich plate/neck whatever you call it and the adapter plates straight from the block.

Idea #1:
If I run the Mocal sandwich adapter first and the earls filter bypass on top of the sandwich plate, this is how it looks:
Image

I feel like I MIGHT be able to clear it with some 90* AN fittings, but I'm not sure how close they will be to the headers...

Idea #2:
Running the Earl's filter bypass straight from the block & attaching the thermostatic sandwich plate for the oil cooler onto the remote filter mount.
Image

However, to run the Earls filter bypass (#1178) straight from the block, I need to get a pipe to run from the block to bypass. Which means going to Home Depot and find a piping short enough to allow it to sit flush to the block. I just don't know how safe that would be...

The only other solution I can think of is finding was what oldeskewltoy did:
Take an early GTS type, or AW11 type oil cooler adapter, mount it first. The hole at the bottom needs a plug, no big deal here.
Image

With the early type adapter... the union/bolt sticks out enough that I can get 3-4 threads with my fingers with the Mocal adapter - more than enough once tightened.
Image
But instead of putting the Mocal adapter on there, I'd run the Jegs filter bypass (#1178).

This is how I plan on setting up my oil system:

Does that look like a good way to route the lines?

Look at it this way Thaison:

The hi-comps and 20v did away with the oil cooler all together.

Can you just bolt the Earl's oil filter bypass straight to the block and ditch OEM sandwich plates completely?

Here you can see how I'm running my GREX thermostatic oil cooler adapter right off my hi-comp block. I'm even running a WIX filter that's .5" taller than the 86 model specific p/n.

Shouldn't that then give you enough header clearance to minimize any heat soak to your oil routing?

To bolt the earls plate straight onto the block, i need something to thread it onto. So I guess I'll have to go to Home Depot and get some 3/4 piping for the oil?

How did you mount your plate straight onto the block?

The kit is meant for the S-13 (CA18DET & Zenki S14 SR) SR20DET which uses a 3/4 x 16 UNF (Unified Fine Thread). You'd need a female 3/4x16 UNF threaded pipe bolt and then what ever thread pitch for your Earl's relocation adapter to thread onto. Does Earl's not have a kit meant for 3/4x16?

Yes! I have it already, but the thread bolts/pipes are either too long or too short.

You think it'd be ok to go get an NPT pipe that's long enough and just thread it to the block and the other end to the Earls filter bypass plate?

something like this:

I don't believe 3/4NPT is going to work properly with 3/4-16 UNF. NPT is usually tapered where UNF is not. You could try since they're dirt cheap Thaison. Just bring the adapter bypass with you to test fit.

Just get a sandwich bolt off a 4ac or/and a 4afe I think will work. Thats is what I did but don't reccomend using anything Earls if you do that, the o-ring is to big for the flat surface on the block. I'm going to redo mine, but for now the RTV is holding up quite well. Looks like a sandwich plate and just a stock filter will fit in there. Good luck.

The problem I believe Thaison is experiencing is that his filter bypass needs enough thread on the male 3/4-16 UNF recessed in the block to secure onto it. You can't use a bolt through sandwich bolt. Let me know if I'm not following ya because maybe I'm thinking of it differently from what you're trying to explain.

Thaison, do you need something like one of these to lengthen the bolt?

^^ that's exactly what I need, except I think an adapter like that would then make it too long :(

I think with some 90* AN fittings, I can clear the headers running it with the mocal sandwich plate directly on the block and earl's filter bypass on top:

I'm gonna get some 90* AN fittings and check the clearance

These should give you the clearance you're looking for Thaison:

I buy nearly all of my fittings from these guys ^^^^
