T50 Gear Ratios: Stock, TRD and Aftermarket

T50

Stock:

* First Gear: 3.587:1
* Second Gear: 2.022:1
* Third Gear: 1.384:1
* Fourth Gear: 1.00:1
* Fifth Gear: 0.861:1

Applications:

* 1982-1983 Carina with 3A/1S/3T-E engine
* 1982 Corona with 1S engine
* 1983 Celica with 3T-E/2T-E engine
* 1984 Corolla with 2A engine
* 1984-1987 Corolla with 4A-GEU/3A-U/4A-U engine

Notes:

* Comes in either a 20 or 22-spline output shaft.
* TRD and Quaife are only a few Aftermarket companies who sell different gears for the T50 transmission.


TRD Gear Set #1:

* First Gear: 2.630:1
* Second Gear: 1.891:1
* Third Gear: 1.380:1
* Fourth Gear: 1.00:1
* Fifth Gear: 0.861:1

TRD Gear Set #2:

* First Gear: 2.341:1
* Second Gear: 1.607:1
* Third Gear: 1.195:1
* Fourth Gear: 1.00:1
* Fifth Gear: 0.886:1

Quaife Gear Set: - **modifications may have to be made to the factory gearbox - these are straight cut, close ratio gears for their "dogbox"

* First Gear: 2.347:1 or 2.600:1
* Second Gear: 1.733:1
* Third Gear: 1.379:1
* Fourth Gear: 1.144:1
* Fifth Gear: 1.00:1

very nice... where can these be had?

what if you run an aftermarket ring/pinion set with gears what would that do? would the gears be extremely short?

you usually don't hear too much about tranny modifications

in short yes that is the point of these gears. the TRD gear sets are made to be paired with the TRD final drive ring and pinion that is 5.375 (discontinued). Here is more info on the TRD gear sets A and B http://www.trdparts.jp/english/list_race-mis_ae86.html

i just found where to buy these gears from but they are pricy

i have been looking into this and the only diffrence between gear set B and stock is a different gear ratio on 1st and 2nd only. 3rd, 4th, and 5th are identical. so if you bought the 1st gear (33032-AE801) and 1st counter gear (33032-AE851) and 2nd gear(33033-AE851) and 2nd counter gear(33424-AE851) you would have the TRD set B and save some money posibly

If you looked at that 1st link it has the ratios for the W55,56,57 as well. These trans have the same case and are interchangeable with the W58. W57 has the same ratios as the 58, except its 5th is the same as the W50. So there are options for you to potentially get close to the ratio's you really want.

IMO (If I'm ever to do this) The W58 having the taller 5th gear makes it a nice trans match with a lower ratio final (r&p) in the diff, maintaining some freeway drivability. And with the lower ratio, the RPM drop when upshifting won't have such a loss of power/torque as it did before.

T50 & 4.3 = 65 mph @ 3700 rpm (80 @ 4550)
T50 & 4.7 = 65 mph @ 4050 rpm (80 @ 4950)

W50 & 4.3 = 65 mph @ 3650 rpm (80 @ 4500)
W50 & 4.7 = 65 mph @ 4000 rpm (80 @ 4900)

W58 & 4.3 = 65 mph @ 3350 rpm (80 @ 4100)
W58 & 4.56 = 65 mph @ 3450 (80 @ 4250)
W58 & 4.7 = 65 mph @ 3650 rpm (80 @ 4500)
W58 & 4.88 = 65 mph @ 3700 rpm (80 @ 4550)


Top mph speed in forward gears; assuming 7500rpm redline, in order 1-5.
Also in "( )" is approx. rpm dropped to when upshifting gears 2-5:

also, Takata Techno Service is again offering their Crossmission kit for the T50 w/ the gear ratios as follows:

1st - 2.78
2nd - 1.87
3rd - 1.383
4th - 1.0
5th - 0.861
Retail Price is 128,000 Yen. special 5the gear (0.775) available upon request for an extra 30000 Yen.

notice that 3rd, 4th & 5th are essentially the same as stock. parts may just be of a stronger material. this i'm speculating about.

Is the 74 corolla sr5 t50 trans uses the same trd gears as the 85 corolla gts if i was to order set??? thanks
