I am curious as to how you are going to patch back that hole. No welding allowed there. LOL

planning on cutting a bigger piece off a junkyard van and putting hinges and a latch on it for easy access

I kind of figured something like that. I would be more inclined to just weld tabs to the existing plate cut-out and just set it back in place fastening it with some screws. Of course, I know people who probably would have thrown a welding blanket over the tank and welded that plate back on.

I thought about both of those ideas but i want it to be sealed air tight when closed and able to change the fuel pump in a hurry if it goes out on the road

I'm a fan of the "port-o-potty" lid mod myself. Butchered both of my 86s this way.

Wouldn't you say that life is less annoying this way now Will? ;)

I would probably go with adding a lip all the way around the plate, adding a little sealant to it to keep it air tight, and securing it in place with 4 screws. It still makes for easy removal without having to cut an entirely new plate.

some updates on this thing!! rebuilt the rear brakes and a/c system. also added some bench seats inside and got some new front end parts. put about 40 k miles on it so far and still going strong
